Most people who are cooking-challenged display their culinary skills safely at the barbecue grill. Grilling hamburgers and hot dogs shouldn't be too difficult, right? But although this sounds like a fairly easy task, you can still end up with charred grilled burgers.
You might not be the expert in the kitchen but you can be the expert on the grill. Follow these steps in grilling hamburgers and frankfurters:
Step 1: When making your burger patties, make sure you buy beef with a good quality. Buy them fresh from the grocery store. Rather than buy 100% lean ground beef, mix it up with a bit of fat. This will make your burger patties juicy. Also choose a good brand of frankfurter.
Step 2: Wash your hands properly for sanitary purposes. Season your ground beef with salt and pepper. If you are feeling more creative, you can also add a bit of crushed day-old bread and parmesan cheese. This makes your patties juicier and tastier.
Step 3: Use your hands to divide the ground beef so you can make equal sizes of patties. Scoop one portion using your hand and lightly roll it up. Use your fingers to flatten the ball. Make sure the edges are slightly thicker than the center. The center tends to puff up on the grill. By doing this, you are preventing the patty from curling or shrinking.
Step 4: Place your patties on a plate.
Step 5: Remove the skin of the hot dogs and wash them. If they are too long, you cut them into equal sizes and skewer them with bamboo sticks. Before using the bamboo sticks, soak them in water first to prevent them from getting burned on the grill.
Step 6: Use a sharp knife and make diagonal cuts on either side of the hot dog. This will allow the inside of the hot dog to cook better.
Step 7: Heat up your gas grill. Crank the heat up to its highest setting. Get a clean cooking brush and brush oil on the grill grates. Place your burger patties. Make sure you provide a space in between them so they can cook evenly. Cook the patties first as hot dogs tend to cook faster. Do not turn them over before they are cooked to perfection so you can have the grill marks on the meat. Flip to the other side once it has turned brown. The other side cooks faster. After grilling the patties, grill the hot dogs next.
Step 8: You can also grill the burger bans. Slice them in half and place them over the grill. Make sure you lower the temperature as bread burns easily.
